Position Summary:
The First Surgical Assist is a licensed clinical professional employed by Regenerative Orthopedic Center who provides intraoperative assistance to orthopedic surgeons during surgical procedures. This part-time position is scheduled based on clinic and surgical volume needs and functions as an integral member of the surgical team to support safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care.
The First Surgical Assist works under the direction of the operating surgeon and in coordination with surgical facility staff, anesthesia providers, and ROC leadership. Flexibility, advanced clinical skill, and the ability to adapt to varying surgical environments are essential to success in the role.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Intraoperative Surgical Assistance
- Serve as First Surgical Assist during orthopedic surgical procedures, including but not limited to joint replacement, sports medicine, and upper or lower extremity procedures, as credentialed.
- Assist with patient positioning, surgical site preparation, draping, and maintenance of the sterile field.
- Provide direct intraoperative support including tissue handling, exposure, suctioning, retraction, hemostasis, suturing, wound closure, and application of dressings or immobilization devices.
- Anticipate surgeon needs and respond promptly to support procedural efficiency and patient safety.
- Properly utilize surgical instruments, implants, and equipment in accordance with facility protocols.
Preoperative and Postoperative Support
- Participate in surgical time-outs and safety checks per facility and regulatory standards.
- Review operative plans and surgeon preferences prior to scheduled cases.
- Assist with postoperative tasks as directed, including communication with recovery staff and completion of required documentation.
Documentation and Compliance
- Complete accurate, timely documentation related to surgical assisting services as required by ROC and affiliated surgical facilities.
- Maintain compliance with scope-of-practice requirements, credentialing standards, and facility bylaws.
- Adhere to HIPAA, OSHA, infection control, and surgical safety protocols at all times.
Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia teams, nursing staff, and surgical technologists.
- Communicate professionally with ROC leadership regarding availability, scheduling needs, and operational considerations.
- Support a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Scheduling and Operational Expectations
- Work a variable, part-time schedule based on clinic and surgical needs.
- Availability may include early start times, fluctuating hours, and coverage across multiple facilities.
- Scheduling is not guaranteed and may vary week to week depending on surgical volume.
- Travel between facilities is required as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Requirements:
- Current licensure or certification as a First Surgical Assistant, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), or other applicable credential as permitted by state law and facility requirements.
- Active, unrestricted state license (as applicable).
- Current BLS certification; ACLS if required by facility.
- Demonstrated experience assisting in orthopedic surgical procedures.
- Eligibility for credentialing and privileging at ROC-affiliated surgical facilities.
Preferred
- Experience across orthopedic subspecialties relevant to ROC.
- Familiarity working in multiple surgical facilities.
- Strong adaptability and comfort with variable schedules.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in operating room and surgical facility environments.
- Requires prolonged standing, walking, and assisting patients, with occasional lifting of medical supplies.
- May involve lifting or repositioning patients and equipment with appropriate assistance.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and surgical instruments consistent with OR settings.
- Schedule varies based on clinic needs and surgical volume.
- Adherence to HIPAA, OSHA, and infection control policies is mandatory.
- Use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system for scheduling and documentation.
- Reliable transportation is required for travel between facilities.
- Employees must follow the clinic’s dress code (scrubs or professional attire) and maintain a professional demeanor.
