Stephanie Kralevich: ROC stands for Regenerative Orthopedic Center. And today, we are at the Tualatin location to speak with one of its Board-Certified orthopedic surgeons. We are with Dr. Jeffrey Feinblatt, a Board-Certified orthopedic surgeon at ROC. What is your specialty at ROC?
Dr. Jeffrey Feinblatt: I do knee reconstruction and sports medicine — everything basically from the knee down.
Kralevich: You’ve been here for seventeen years. What is your most common procedure?
Feinblatt: Knee issues are way above everything else. Meniscus pathology is really common, so we do that all the time.
Kralevich: Doctor, how have the surgical procedures changed since you began practicing here at ROC seventeen years ago?
Feinblatt: A lot of what I do is minimally-invasive surgery, and that’s been around for a long time. But really, the instrumentation and the implants that we use is changed, allowing us to treat a lot, a broader range of or variety of pathology. You know, there’s less scarring, there’s faster healing, and most times significantly less pain associated with the procedure.
Kralevich: I love that the slogan here is saving lifestyles because you’re getting people back on their feet.
Feinblatt: We want to not prolong life but really improve people’s lives.
Kralevich: What advice do you have for people who want to stay injury free and avoid the need for surgery in the first place?
Feinblatt: In Oregon, seventy percent of patients are Vitamin D deficient. We just don’t have exposure of our skin to the sun year round. And so Vitamin D deficiency is very common, and in people who are Vitamin D deficient, they are much more likely to have a stress fracture or stress reaction or these chronic injuries that just continue to nag. So I ask almost everyone, are you taking Vitamin D supplementation? If they’re not, we should be taking Vitamin D. That’s a very simple thing that we can do.
Kralevich: Let’s say someone is injured and facing the need for surgery. Why should they choose ROC?
Feinblatt: We are orthopedic surgeons. That’s what we do for a living, but we don’t only operate. We treat patients from injury till completion. And a lot of times, people don’t need surgery. If we can get someone through with equivalent results without surgery, we want to do that. A good example of that is Achilles tendon ruptures. A lot of times now, we are treating Achilles tendon ruptures just as successfully without surgery as we used to treat with surgery. So, yes, we do surgery, but there’s a lot more to it than just that.
